John Wick

James Hinshaw - Saturday, November 01, 2014

Just saw an excellent action movie, John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves (Matrix, Speed), Michael Nyqvist (Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones, Atonement), Willem Dafoe (Spider Man, The English Patient), and Adreanne Palicki (G.I. Joe-Retaliation, Red Dawn).

Kneau plays John Wick, a retired hit man for the Russian Mob.  He quit when he got married 5 years ago, his wife just died from a long illness, he is living alone when he receives an unexpected gift.  His wife knew she had limited time, she bought him a beagle puppy to keep him company after she has passed.  So he bonds with the dog, takes it out for ride in his 1969 vintage Mustang.  Ends up at a gas station where Alfie (the bratty son of Michael Nyqvist, the head of the Russian Mob) asks him how much he would take for the car.  Kneau says not for sale, Alfie decides to break into his house, steal the car and kill his dog.  Bad decision.  Because you see, Kneau was a former hit man for Alfie's dad, the big boss.  And he got out by doing what the boss asked him to do, which was impossible.  So he is a bad guy.

We see him tear up his home, unearth a huge load of guns and gold coins, and start down the "road of perdition".  At one point Michael puts a $2 million dollar bounty on his head, even old friends like Willem Defoe begin to look at a big payday.  The Russians hit his home, 12 men against Keanu, not a fair fight.  They don't stand a chance.  He does most of his own fighting scenes, uses a gun (or guns) really well.  When he does get hurt, he has a doctor fix him up so he can go kill some more, take two pills before physical action!  He ends up in a hotel that is a safe haven, no killing allowed, full of assassins.  Even there he is attacked by a fierce woman (Adreanne Palicki) who is just about the best female fighter ever.  He is helped by another friend, but she remains a force to be reckoned with.

Just to be clear, the body count is why high in this movie, more than I think we have ever seen before.  And guys are killed in grisly ways, not just a head shot, more a couple of limbs severed then a head shot.  Keanu is amazingly fast, and precise, his moves are explosive.  He does not hesitate, just pulls the trigger.

On a completely ironic note, he recently had a home invasion, where he wakes up to find a woman in his home.  He talks to her for a few minutes before calling 911, she brought in luggage, was going to stay awhile!  The police recommended he get a dog.  From the looks of this movie, he do not need a dog.

One of the best scenes is in a night club where he goes after the Russians, lots of action and some really great moves.  Keanu does most of his own fight scenes, he has moved up into the ranks of Denzel or Liam Neeson.  The movie ends with a fight scene in the rain, Keanu in a new Dodge Challenger versus a couple of Tahoes.  And a nifty knife fight.  We enjoyed it, go with 4 semi-automatics.
