Iron Man 2

Mike Hinshaw - Wednesday, June 02, 2010

Just saw a movie that has a lot of buzz going on, Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man 1, Sherlock Holmes), Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man, Shakespeare in Love), Don Cheadle (Ocean’s 13, Crash), Scarlett Johansson (The Other Boleyn Girl, Black Dahlia), Sam Rockwell (Everybody’s Fine, Frost/Nixon), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler, Sin City), and even the stand-up comedian, Garry Shandling (What Planet Are You From, Trust The Man).  Lots of folks, and a pretty good story to go with it.

If you saw the first one, Robert Downey Jr. is still the same character, Tony Stark, maker of excellent weapons and defense systems.  He has created the ultimate weapon in Iron Man, he is Iron Man.  Turns out being Iron Man has saved his life, that is how he escaped from the bad guys in Iraq, made himself a suit of armor, and  installed a power cell in his chest to keep himself alive.  So it has worked, but now we see the other side of the sword, the same cell keeping him alive is also killing him.  The element he is using is somewhat toxic to his body, and the effects of living off of the power cell are catching up, he is dying.  But he is a national hero, and as such, has to keep up the Iron Man gig.

Mickey Rourke comes into play as the son of the scientist who helped work on the concept behind the Iron Man energy cell. His dad dies, and Mickey comes back to seek revenge.  He works on and soon perfects his own power cell and Iron Man suit, called Whiplash, maybe even stronger than Robert’s.  They have a show-down during the Grand Prix in Monaco, it has some great action scenes.  We get to see Mickey use these huge electric whips to cut up some formula one cars.  I know some of this is done by computer, but it is nifty computer work.  Now the government wants the Iron Man suit for themselves, since it looks like another set of atomic muscles is on the loose.  Don Cheadle comes to Robert’s home, tells him he gotta let it go.  Robert has had a little too much to drink, a struggle issues, destroys Robert’s home, Don takes off in one of the extra Iron Man suits Robert had stored at his home lab.  The action then gets into gear, lots of super suit fighting, turns out Mickey has joined forces with Tony Stark’s biggest weapon competitor, Sam Rockwell, and they are turning out these suits by the dozens.

We may have guessed the sequence, but it is still pretty good action, and we come to realize that the suit is important, but the brains running it are even more vital.  Now, the big surprise is Scarlett Johansson, playing Black Widow, Tony Stark’s newest assistant.  Yes, Gwyneth is still there, in fact promoted.  But Scarlett plays a super fighting female who speaks 6 or 8 languages, and can handle a dozen bad guys, laying them down with Jackie Chan/Jet li type moves.  I would imagine some camera work, maybe even wires were used, but it is still some great fighting.  So did we like the movie.  Yup, it played well for us, not quite as good as original, but that is always hard to do.  So we will go with 3.5 power cells.
