Girl on the Train

Jonathan Hinshaw - Monday, October 17, 2016

Just saw the most-talked-about movie of the year: The Girl on the Train, starring Emily Blunt (Sicario, Edge of Tomorrow), Haley Bennett (Magnificent 7, the Equalizer), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible-Rouge Nation, Florence Foster Jenkins), Justin Theroux (American Psycho, Inland Empire, also Jennifer Anniston’s husband!), Luke Evans (Dracula, Fast & Furious 6), Edgar Ramirez (Bourne Ultimatum, Point Break), Allison Janney (West Wing, Mom-both on TV), and Lisa Kudrow (Friends, The Comeback-again on TV).

Based on the book by the same title, we see the story of Rachael (Emily) who goes through a horrible divorce, looses her job and sense of self-worth, slips into an alcoholic depression.  She has not worked in months, but still takes the train into the city, drinks herself silly, rides back home.  We get flashbacks of her at an office party with her husband (Justin), where she makes a scene with his boss’s wife (Lisa Kudrow) and almost gets him fired, attacks him verbally and physically, gets pretty tense.  They get divorced, he may be at fault, she ends up leaving the house, he moves his new wife Anna (Rebecca) in the old house.

As Emily rides the train in each day, she notices a beautiful girl named Megan  (Haley) who is married, living in a house two doors down from where she used to live.  Sees her on the deck with her husband (Luke), they are very physical!  Then one day she sees her on the deck with another man (Edgar), cheating on Luke!  She is frustrated, gets smashed, goes back to the old neighborhood, then blacks out.  Wakes up in her apartment covered in blood, all bruised, cannot remember what the heck happened.  Turns out, Megan is missing, TV reports say it is a mystery, not to be found anywhere.

Emily is obsessed with finding out more, goes to Luke to tell him she saw Megan with another man on the deck, wants to help.  She IDs Edgar (a therapist Megan had been seeing), police come to talk to him, starts a big mess.  Soon the detective  (Janney) turns up at her apartment to question her.  Lot going on here.  Emily is now one suspect, the husband is the other, no clues as to what really happened.

Emily’s Ex-husband sees her at Megan’s home, tells her to stay away.  Had good reason to, she had gotten drunk and done something really stupid involving his new wife and baby.  We begin to form an opinion on what happened, which is not what happened!

This was a great movie, kept us in suspense till the end.  Lots of blood and gore, some nudity, more than one death.  Not one to take your 12 year old to.  3.5 flashbacks.
