Fate of the Furious

Jonathan Hinshaw - Monday, April 24, 2017

The Fate of the Furious (number 8 in the series!) was a good movie, starring the usual gang from the earlier movies: Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, and introducing for the first time Charlize Theron (Prometheus, Mad Max) as a bad person, and Scott Eastwood (Fury, Suicide Squad) as a good person.   More

Wow, this is one exciting movie.  Life starred Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Green Lantern), Rebecca Ferguson (Florence Foster Jenkins, Girl on the Train), Jake Gyllenhaal (Prisoners, Nightcrawler), and Ariyon Bakare (Dark Knight, Dancing On the Edge).  Not based on a true story, this is a movie about a group of scientists on the space station orbiting earth.  They manage to collect samples from Mars and bring them on board to examine them up close.  Ariyon is in charge of the specimen testing, he puts one sample in a chamber to see if they can get it to grow with different atmospheres and temperatures.  And grow it does.  Into a very intelligent, demanding organism.  Ends up escaping into the testing chamber, taking over as Ariyon tries to control it.  They have named the organism Calvin, and cute name for a bad alien.  It grows from a single cell to a really fast thing that looks like an octopus, able to move fast and get into almost any crack or crevice.  Ryan Reynolds goes in to kill it, not so successful.  Turns out Ryan was originally set to be the lead role, but another movie moved him out of the top spot.  So Jake is the main space hero. More

Zookeepers Wife

Jonathan Hinshaw - Sunday, April 09, 2017

Saw a good movie recently, based on the dairies of real life zoo keepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski.  They ran the zoo in Warsaw, the film is based on events from 1939-1946.  Starts out with Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, The Help) playing the zookeepers wife, Johan Heldenbergh (lots of foreign TV) is her husband.  They have a nifty zoo, where the lion cubs sleep with their family, a camel runs alongside Jessica on her morning ride through the property, and many of the animals are up close and personal with the zoo attendees.  All this is changed when the Germans begin to drop bombs on Warsaw, and the zoo is hit hard.   More

Watched a great movie: Allied, starring Brad Pitt (Inglourious Basterds, Fight Club), Marion Cotillard (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises), and lots of other actors playing Germans and Allied forces.  This is a love story, a war story, a mystery, lot going on here.  Pitt is an intelligence officer in North Africa, who meets up with Cottiard who is a spy just back from France.  They jointly work together to eliminate a high ranking German officer, then move to England, where Pitt falls hard for Marion.  More
